4 July :: Portugal - Greece 0-1
The final of Euro 2004 began with Greece retrieving into defense, leaving Portugal to take the early initiative in front of an expectant and fanatical home crowd. The hosts, however were repeatedly denied by the organized Greek defense and 57 minutes into the game a cross from Angelis Basinas put Greece ahead. In the tense second half, an inspired Traianos Dellas shut out Portugal's attempts to equalize. After running down five minutes of injury time, Greece were officially allowed to raise the European title.
31 June :: Greece - Czech Republic 1-0
Greece ripped up the form book by beating Euro 2004 favorites Czech Republic with a silver goal to face host nation Portugal in the final.The Czech started off with confidence producing a number of chances.Tomas Rosicky struck the crossbar from a spectacular volley.The Greek defense and goalkeeper barely held their ground until the late first half when starman Pavel Nedved injured himself and limped off to be replaced by Vladimir Smicer.The Czech Republic continued their raids in the second half but could not finish.Jan Koller fired wide from 10 yards.Jankulovsky wasted another good opportunity as well.The match went into extra time.With the seconds ticking down to the end of the first extra period, Dellas lost his marker Bolf at the near post to glance home the winning header from a corner.
25 June :: France - Greece 0-1
Defending champion France were sensationally sent back home by tournament surprise Greece.Greece were lively and keen to work hard, and outplayed France in an uneventful first half. France came out with more verve in the second period and threatened with a host of chances, notably a late Thierry Henry header, but Greece held firm.A powerful header in the 67 minute from Angelos Charisteas stunned France, who looked out of sorts and uninspired. France were helpless in their attempts for recovery regardless of their all-star team featuring Zidane, Henry, Trezeguet, Thuram and Makelele.Greece goalscorer Angelos Charisteas stated during the press conference that "This is the greatest moment in Greek football."
20 June :: Greece - Russia 2-1
Surprise package Greece scraped through to the last eight of Euro 2004 despite being beaten by Russia. Greece needed just a point to progress but got off to the worst possible start when an error allowed Dmitri Kirichenko to steer a shot home after 68 seconds. It was the quickest goal in the history of the competition, and Dmitri Bulykin then made it two with a bullet header. But a chipped Zisis Vryzas goal for Greece meant they went through ahead of Group A rivals Spain on goals scored.
16 June :: Spain - Greece 1-1
Spain played an extremely entertaining game but failed to cut short Greece's persistent run at Euro 2004.The Greeks defended in numbers while waiting to counter.In the 28th minute Morientes opened the score when Mihalis Kapsis lost possession.Greece came back in the 66th minute with a beautiful equalizer from Charisteas.
12 June :: Greece - Portugal 2-1
The Euro 2004 hosts Portugal were upset 2-1 by Greece in the tournament's opening match. Just in the seventh minute of play, Georgios Karagounis opened the score from a quick turnover as Paulo Ferreira lost possession in midfield. Ronaldo is to blame for giving away a penalty in the 51st minute. Basinas converted doubling the Greek lead. Luis Figo's admirable efforts generated a goal as Ronaldo headed in from his cross. Unfortunately for Portugal, this happened three minutes in overtime... Both Portuguese and Greek fans were stunned by the result. The latter were enthusiastically chanting their German coach's name.
