hi i would like to know when a defender should move forward and when should he stay back?
I have already covered this issue so make sure you go over one of the previous questions called “When to make attacking runs and when to stay back.” The primary reason for making offensive runs as a defender is to help with the buildup of an attack. Generally, you must avoid getting involved this unless you feel that you will get the ball or leave an “impression.” For example: by making a forward run when the ball is on the opposite flank, you will stretch horizontally the enemy defense.
The two primary factors which you should consider before initiating your run are:
1. Offense – how many player are involved in the attack? If there is a large number of them, your involvement could be pointless.
2. Defense – how many defenders are staying back? If you feel that the quantity/quality of teammates staying back is not adequate, it may be wiser to help them with your presence.
A dead ball situation is perfect for moving up as a defender as long as you possess applicable skills like crossing or finishing.
