As coach of Bulgaria's national team, Stoichkov finished the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign disappointingly. After losing to Croatia and Sweden (who Bulgaria hasn't been able to defeat in over 20 years) the country has no option but to look forward to EURO 2008.

CSKA President Georgi Kalchev awarded Stoichkov a golden medal for his lifetime achievements. It happened at the club's end of the year ceremony. Hristo was moved by the gesture and proclaimed: "CSKA was a great experience in my life. I learned discipline at the club. I own credit to the late Dobri Djurov and Admiral Ivan Dobrev." After his speech, Bulgaria's head coach handed over the medal to his former mentor Dimitar Penev, who was also present at the event.

Hristo Stoichkov has been unanimously selected as head coach of the Bulgarian national team after the resignation of Plamen Markov. Markov voluntarily left his position after Bulgaria finished with three losses at Euro 2004. Internal sources confirm that Markov would not have been fired if he wanted to remain as head coach.

D.C. United will play without its veteran goalkeeper Nick Rimando when they conclude a home-and-home series with the Metrostars at RFK Stadium. D.C. forward Hristo Stoitchkov is expected to return for Sunday's game following knee surgery several weeks ago.
Three-time MLS champions, D.C. has not made the playoffs since 1996. The four top teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs with the top two earning home-field advantage. Another win over the Metrostars this weekend will tie the season series and increase D.C.'s chances of winning the Atlantic Cup for the second straight year. The teams will meet for the third time in seven days when they play at Rutgers University for a place in the U.S. Open Cup Final.

Stoichkov brought another victory for DC United in their match against the New England Revolution. The Bulgarian who came in the 77th minute, struck a powerful volley right at the keeper Matt Reese who mishandled the ball giving a chance for Dima Kovalenko to finish. This goal was volatile in the match, which finished with a 1-0 victory for DC. It also lifted Stoichkov's team from the bottom of the charts for the first time this season.
